Section VI Power Ratings

Welcome

Welcome to the Section VI Power Ratings home page! A site dedicated to following Section VI of the NYSPHSAA and the Monsignor Martin league. This project spawned from a deep love of high school sports and the level of competition that comes with it. The goal of this site is to serve as a cool resource to see how teams stack up against each other throughout the season.

About

  • How are the power ratings calculated?

A team's power rating (PR) is calculated from the sum of their Margin of Victory (MOV) and Strength of Schedule (SOS):

MOV: a team's average adjusted* margin of victory for their qualified games**

SOS: a team's strength of schedule based on the power ratings of their qualified opponents**

    * raw margins of victory are capped at a certain value for each sport to reduce the effects of blowouts

** only games against opponents from Section VI or Monsignor Martin (varies by sport) are analyzed

  • What do the power ratings actually represent?

A team's power rating represents how much better or worse they are than average. Comparing power ratings will provide the projected outcome if two teams were to play each other. If Team 1 has a power rating of +20 and Team 2 has a power rating of +10, then Team 1 would be projected to win the game by 10.

  • Are these ratings used for sectional seeding?

No, this site has no affiliation with Section VI. These ratings are merely here for fun. That said, I believe these ratings provide a much better picture of team strength than the method currently used for sectional seeding.
