FAQs

  • How are the power ratings calculated?

A team's power rating (PR) is calculated from the sum of their MOV and SOS values:

MOV: represents a team's average adjusted* margin of victory for their qualified games**

SOS: represents a team's strength of schedule based on the power ratings of their qualified opponents**

    * raw margins of victory are capped at a certain value for each sport to reduce the effects of blowouts

** only games against opponents from Section VI or Monsignor Martin (varies by sport) are analyzed

  • What do the power ratings actually represent?

A team's power rating represents how much better or worse they are than average. A power ratings of 0 is average, +12 means a team is 12 points above average, -21 means a team is 21 points below average. Comparing power ratings will provide the projected outcome if two teams were to play each other. If Team 1 has a power rating of +20 and Team 2 has a power rating of +10, then Team 1 would be projected to win the game by 10 points.

  • Are these ratings used for sectional seeding?

No, this site has no affiliation with Section VI. These ratings are merely here for fun. That said, I believe these ratings provide a much better picture of team strength than the method currently used for sectional seeding.

  • Why is this team ranked higher or lower than this other team?

Unlike most power rankings you may see on Twitter, these power ratings are 0% subjective. Meaning they are not done by hand where a conscious decision is made to place one team in front of another. Instead, these power ratings are generated by a computer using simple math that takes into account each game played by each team (against Section VI or MM opponents). Any issue you may have with the rankings is an issue with the way they are calculated, in which case I would encourage you to make your own power rating system, it's pretty fun!
